about

This old favourite was recorded in 2009, during the sessions for the Jumbo/The Long Goodbye EP, and left uncompleted until the tail end of the Danger Island sessions in 2018. It was dusted off and completed for inclusion on the 'One in the Grave and One on the Beat' compilation, a collection of demos, outtakes and oddities released to Kickstarter backers in May 2018.

lyrics

Sonny growed up in a halfway home
He went to the promised land half-way grown
He’d jump on a bottle like a dog on a bone
’Bout halfway up the stairs

Sonny came to with a knock knock knock
In a gold Eldorado with a roll-back top
And his front two wheels on a forty-foot drop
And he couldn’t think why or where

Fe, Fi, I don’t wanna die
Sonny gone to heaven, left me behind
Me and mine for Auld Lang Syne
Will all be brought to mind

Bob got born in a folding bed
He wasn’t wearing nothin’ but the hat on his head
Had a fiddle in his hand till the day he dropped dead
He was half way up the stairs

Had a great big grin like a chimpanzee
Well he drunk till he couldn’t see his own four feet
Had one in the grave and one on the beat
And he died in a rocking chair

Fe, Fi, I don’t wanna die
Sonny gone to heaven, left me behind
Me and mine for Auld Lang Syne
Will all be brought to mind

Woah woah woah, woe is me
Lord, Lord, Lord, I just can’t see
Why oh why, why oh why
I just can’t seem to drink them off my mind

Joey woke up in the morning sun
He couldn’t recollect where he’d come from
High heel shoes and a red dress on
And half way up the stairs

Mama come runnin’ with her curlers on
‘Good God almighty what’ve I ever done?
Y’got shit on your shoes and your wig on wrong
And you look like you don’t care.’

Fe, Fi, I don’t wanna die
Sonny gone to heaven, left me behind
Me and mine for Auld Lang Syne
Will all be brought to mind

Woah woah woah, woe is me
Lord, Lord, Lord, I just can’t see
Why oh why, why oh why
I just can’t seem to drink them off my mind

Fe, Fi, I don’t wanna die
Sonny gone to heaven, left me behind
Me and mine for Auld Lang Syne
Will all be brought to mind
